When I was a kid, my family used to go to this Italian restaurant. For some reason, this place served hushpuppies in a bread for the table sort of way. But that wasn’t the weirdest part. They served them with queso! Even though Southern food with a Mexican dip being served in an Italian restaurant might make you question a place’s quality, we loved it. I will say it closed recently, so maybe you are right and I’m the crazy one.

But the hushpuppies were not the reason. If you don’t know what they are, they are small balls of flour and cornmeal, combined with some spices, and deep fried. They are a perfect accompaniment to a seafood dinner, or apparently, Italian food. I never thought about making them before though. That was until I asked my mom for some of my grandma’s recipes.
My mom found this recipe card while looking through a cook book that my grandma got as a wedding gift from my great-grandma. So there’s no telling how old this actually is. My mom thought it might even be my great-grandma’s handwriting! I figured if someone bothered to write it down, it must be good, right?
Spoiler alert, they were. One thing I didn’t think about before I started though was I think onions have gotten a lot bigger. Don’t use big onions or your batter is going to be too moist. I would go for a very small onion. Of course, it’s hard to deep fry something and not make something tasty. Also, this is a super easy thing to make, even if you have never cooked before.
Hushpuppies From My Grandmother

- 1 tsp salt
- 2 tbsp vegetable oil
- 1 egg beaten
- ½ cup water
- 1 onion small and diced
Instructions

- Drop the hushpuppies into the oil. Make sure they are submerged. Fry for about 4 minutes or until golden brown.
- Take out hushpuppies, let cool and enjoy!
