Background Info
I first learned how to make French toast in middle school home economics. Fast-forward to today, and I’m using bananas, adding rum, and lighting it on fire to make French toast with bananas foster. How did I go from point A to point B? When I first learned how to make French toast, it was the only thing I knew how to cook. I wasn’t encouraged to go anywhere near the kitchen, but I was proud of my new abilities. So one fateful Mother’s Day morning, I made French toast for my mom.
My mom loved it! Maybe she was more surprised than anything, but a fire was burning in me now. What else could I make? Unfortunately, my small fire was more of a smolder at the time. I wouldn’t start to fully explore that until I went to college. Recently, my mom reminded me about my French toast, and asked me to make it for her again. How could I top my previous creations? The answer: French toast with bananas foster.
I like lighting things on fire, I think all guys do at some deep prehistoric level. Also, what’s cooler than breakfast and a show?! Even better, an excuse to include rum with breakfast. I you don’t like rum, might I recommend some savory scallion pancakes instead?
French Toast With Bananas Foster Tips
I’m not sure how much value I can add here. This is actually really easy. Butter, sugar, bananas? Just try and make that taste bad. One thing I can think of is get your pan hot before you add the French toast. That also goes for cooking most things. Also, for the bananas foster, you don’t need to pay heavy attention to measuring everything. Again, it’s sugar, butter, and rum. Delicious in every way.
Last tip, use something long to ignite your rum with so you don’t risk burning yourself. A strand of uncooked spaghetti can be used if the only thing you have is matches. Also, for now I’m using bread I bought from the bakery. If you want to make your own bread too, check this out.
French Toast With Bananas Foster
Ingredients
The French Toast
- 8 slices brioche bread
- 4 eggs
- ¼ cup heavy cream
- ½ tsp cinnamon
- ½ tsp nutmeg
- 4 tbsp butter
The Bananas Foster
- 2 bananas sliced
- 4 tbsp butter
- ½ cup brown sugar
- ½ cup rum
Instructions
The French Toast
- Crack and whisk the eggs. Combine the eggs, heavy cream, cinnamon and nutmeg in a mixing bowl.
- Slice the brioche bread into equal slices. Melt 1/2 – 1 tablespoon of butter in the skillet or griddle before each slice of toast is made.
- Dip a slice of bread into the mixture, let it thoroughly coat the face of the bread. Flip the bread over and do the other side. Shake the bread to get any excess coating off the bread.
- Once the butter is melted and your skillet or griddle is hot, lay the bread down. Cook for 3 minutes or until bottom is light brown. Flip to the other side and repeat for 3 minutes. Take off heat. Repeat above steps until you finish your mixture.
The Bananas Foster
- Melt the butter in a large skillet. Add the sugar and mix together. Cook for 3 minutes.
- Add sliced bananas and cook for another 3 minutes.
- Pour your rum into the skillet and ignite with a long lighter.
- Stir the mixture constantly with a long wooden spoon so the sugar does not burn.
- Blow out the flame after 10 seconds if you want a stronger rum flavor, or you can let it burn until all the alcohol is gone.
- Put the bananas foster on top of your french toast and serve with real maple syrup.
